Executive Committee

Dr. Arnie Berk, Dr. Michael Carey, Dr. Albert Courey, Dr. Stephen Smale

Dr. Arnie Berk is a Professor of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics. He conducts research on adenoviral gene regulation and the mechanisms of gene activation. Dr. Berk is co-author of the widely read graduate textbook, Molecular Cell Biology (Lodish et al., Freeman Press).

Dr. Michael Carey a Professor of Biological Chemistry. He conducts research on the mechanistic aspects of RNA polymerase II transcription. Dr. Carey is a co-founder and former instructor of the international Eukaryotic Gene Expression course held annually at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He recently co-authored a textbook based on the course entitled Transcriptional Regulation in Eukaryotes: Concepts, Strategies, and Techniques (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press).

Dr. Albert Courey is a Professor of Biochemistry. He conducts research on gene regulation in Drosophila development. Dr. Courey teaches a yearly graduate level course in Mechanisms of Eukaryotic Gene Regulation. In addition, he is an instructor for a yearly Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory course in Protein Purification and Characterization, which attracts research scientists from all over the world.

Dr. Stephen Smale is a Professor of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics and an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He conducts research on gene regulation in the immune system. Along with Dr. Carey, Dr. Smale was co-founder and instructor of the Eukaryotic Gene Regulation course at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He also co-authored with Dr. Carey the textbook, Transcriptional Regulation in Eukaryotes: Concepts, Strategies, and Techniques.

The Gene Regulation Program promotes intramural research and interdisciplinary collaboration through several forums. The monthly Program Area group meeting meets at 6 PM the first Tuesday of the month in Boyer 159. This meeting serves as the main incubator for intellectual exchange within the group as well as a vehicle to encourage and initiate inter-program collaborations. These exchanges are further strengthened through a weekly journal club at 1 PM in Boyer 1st floor conference room (Boyer 130).
